Duration:
12’2020 – 10’2022

Ovcharitsa Dam is an important habitat for many species of migratory and waterfowl. For this reason, the dam has been declared a protected area within the ecological network Natura 2000. The protected area at the dam covers an area of 43,000 decares. Up to 45,799 waterfowl of about 35 species are concentrated annually around and in the dam. Of the 87 total bird species identified, 22 are included in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria and 62 species are of European conservation importance. The dam is one of the important places for wintering of the great cormorant, the Dalmatian pelican, and the great white-fronted goose, black stork, etc.

The project implements two measures from the approved Management Plan for protected area BG0002023 “Ovcharitsa Dam”:

  • Construction of pile platforms for rest and overnight stay.
  • Afforestation.
